Finding new donors is the top priority for most charities, according to new research.

A study by Pearlfinders shows that 68 per cent of charities polled say donor acquisition is the most important thing on their agenda, reports ThirdSector.

Fundraisers are also putting more effort into securing new donors and spending less time asking existing donors to give more.

Pearlfinders asked 96 charities to choose, from three options, what their main fundraising priority had been in the first quarter of 2011.

Some 68 per cent said donor acquisition (up from 56 per cent last year), 18 per cent said developing existing donors (down from 37 per cent in 2010) and 12 per cent said retaining donors (up from seven per cent in 2010).

A great way to secure new donors is by staging marketing and promotional events – and you could use promotional items to really spread the word.

Recent research from US fundraising agency TrueSenseMarketing reveals that people who go to a charity's website to give money donate more than those giving through social networks.

Why not stick a contact number or your website address on promotional mugs or pens and give them to potential donors?
