Mars Food, the company behind Uncle Ben’s and Dolmio sauces, has been praised for recommending moderate consumption of its products.

The firm said some of its sauces have high salt, sugar or fat content and should therefore only be consumed once a week.

According to consumer brand PR consultancy Cirkle, Mars Food should be “applauded for this brave move, which is rooted in social responsibility.”

“It’s an innovative nod to the educational role that many manufacturers will continue to take,” said Rikki Weir, Director of the organisation.

Rikki Jones, Director of Healthcare PR agency GCI Health, also commended the step, saying it is good to see a prominent name in the sector demonstrating self-regulation.

“The commercial industry most definitely has a greater role to play in tackling consumer food choice and obesity,” she said.

Tam Fry of the National Obesity Forum added that Mars had indicated a willingness to move towards offering healthier products some years ago.

Speaking to the BBC, he said he is therefore pleased to see the firm is “putting their money where their mouth is.”

Mr Fry went on to state that while its move is very unusual, it is also highly imaginative.
