The number of private sector firms in the UK at the start of last year increased by 48,000 since the start of 2009, statistics from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills show.

Small and medium-sized enterprises together accounted for 99.9 per cent of all enterprises, 59.1 per cent of private sector employment and 48.6 per cent of private sector turnover.

“Private sector enterprises will create growth in our economy so it is encouraging to see that the number of businesses at the start of 2010 had increased,” said business and enterprise minister Mark Prisk.

“I am determined that the government will do everything it can to create the right environment for these businesses to now expand and grow, and also to encourage more people to set up on their own.”

Promotional products are a great way to get new businesses off the ground.

After all, start-ups are often looking for affordable and interesting ways to market their products and services – it's no surprise many turn toward promotional items to get their name out and about.
